The comment we get most often from strangers about Kenna (other than her red hair) is her height! She has really gotten to be a long tall girl in the past few months. I always assumed that kids get a little taller each year, like an inch or two, but putting my 23 month old in sometimes 3T clothes is not something I expected!
I was noticing you can really see it in her legs. She looks like so much more of a little kid than a baby in her high chair now:

She used to sit with her feet straight out and resting on the tray like that all the time, then one day we noticed her legs were too long to do it anymore! Such a big, tall toddler girl.

Pumpkin Patch 2010.
Last weekend, we took Kenna on our annual trip to go find some pumpkins in the pumpkin patch. We took her to Hillridge just like last year, thinking that at this age, she would enjoy all the fun extras they have.
We started the morning in perfect fall weather by feeding the barnyard animals. Kenna has a book she loves that has helped her learn several animal sounds, and she was so proud of herself to be able to identify the animals she was seeing! The only one she had a hard time with were the goats, which she kept alternating with "neigh" and "ruff ruff"... apparently she thought they were some sort of horse/dog combination.
She loved watching the feed slide down the tube to the goats and chickens!
She made particularly good friends with this sweet little white pony. She kept leaning closer and closer until it sneezed and she jumped back about 4 feet.
And yes, I did dress her like a tiny girl farmer on purpose.
I think she could have just seen the animals for awhile and gone home, and it would have been a very successful day in her book! But there was more to see...

Next, we headed for the giant "sandbox" of corn kernels. We thought she would like this the best, but Matt plopped Kenna right inside the door and she didn't seem to thrilled to try to move. I finally climbed in to help her and figured out why: the kernels were actually about 3 feet deep and almost impossible to move in! Matt almost had to come dig us both out. (We are still finding corn kernels in funny places- like our laundry basket and dryer vent!)
Then she was getting a little on the cranky side, so we headed for the main event: the hayride out to the pumpkins. We asked an unsuspecting fellow hayrider to take a quick family picture:
and arrived at the pumpkin patch. It was so funny to see Kenna's amazement at the vast amount of pumpkins, just like last year, although she was big enough to react totally different to them this year. First, she ran around trying to sit on all the pumpkins.
Then, she started licking all the pumpkins and saying "mine."
When I told her she could pick out a pumpkin to take home, she started bringing me every single one she could lift enough to carry it. Luckily, there weren't many she could actually lift, and she was careful to inspect the bigger ones Daddy picked out.
And littlest pumpkin was also along for the ride:
Now all three pumpkins are living on our porch where she points to each one and says "my pumpum" every time she sees them. We are so happy to have our fall pumpkins!

Mountain Wedding!
A few months ago, Matt was asked by a good friend of his from preschool to officiate her wedding! We got the honor and joy as a couple to get to know Terra Warwick and Juan Sosa a little better until the time that their wedding date snuck up on us... 10/10/10! (Isn't that fun? They'll never forget their anniversary. And I say that because I am the one who forgets our anniversary date in our marriage!)
So two weekends ago, we drove up to the beautiful Linville, NC area (near Boone and the Blue Ridge Parkway) for the weekend to participate in their wedding. Granddaddy and Nana B. graciously offered to keep Kenna until Sunday when they drove up for the wedding, and Matt's sister Leanne's family kept our dog Pontouf, so we truly had a free weekend just the two of us! (Thank you all again!)
It was a new experience for Matt and I for him to officiate a wedding on his own. For me, it was fun because I got to hang out with and get to know the wedding party during the rehearsal and all of the wedding events! The weather was beautiful all weekend, and we couldn't have had a better or more refreshing time in the mountains.
We drove up Friday night just in time to settle in and change clothes for the rehearsal. I never got a picture of the cabin we stayed in (even though every time we left to go somewhere I said "I want to remember to get a picture of the cabin before we leave"- ask Matt), but it was a beautiful place in a really adorable small mountain village. Matt and I were not sure we wanted to leave! The rehearsal was our first glimpse of the beautiful wedding site Terra & Juan picked out. Here is the only picture I got of it right before the sun went down among the amazing fall colors:
After the rehearsal, we made a beeline for Matt's favorite barbeque place, Pappy's, where we ate the most delicious corn fritter appetizer I've ever had! Matt loves this barbeque place, and has even driven all the way to Banner Elk just to eat there a couple of years ago only to find that it was closed for renovations. It's open now and even better than we remembered!
I resisted the urge to force him to stand in front of the restaurant with the sign for a picture and took this one of his delicious dinner arriving instead!
On Saturday, we had a wide open day until the rehearsal dinner that night... and we packed a whole weekend into that one day! We started out by sleeping in and then getting coffee and breakfast out at a really cute local cafe called The River Dog. I felt SO SPOILED- those of you who have kids can understand how just sleeping in and having an uninterrupted, un-rushed breakfast with your love is an amazing "break!" Oh how we used to take that for granted!
We had seen posters around town that nearby Grandfather Mountain was having an "Octoberfest" so we decided to start the morning there. They had a small craft show with local artisans and lots of fun kid activities like a mini fair. Since we clearly didn't come for the beer, we got our funnel cake and apple cotton candy "to go" and took it on a ride up the mountain! It was so strange to see the ski slopes covered in grass and to take the ski lift with no skis, but also very peaceful and perfect, beautiful weather!

After we left, we still had a little time before the evening wedding festivities, so we headed into Valle Crucis to go to Mast General store. We love this place! By this point, Matt and I were both seriously ready to move to the mountains. We didn't take any pictures, but here is a link to when we went two years ago right before Kenna arrived. We would love to make this a yearly trip!
We got back in time to change and head out to the rehearsal dinner- Juan's family hosted a delicious fiesta at a local Mexican restaurant with such delicious food! Right afterward there was a welcome dessert for all the out of town guests, with beautiful fall decorations and an amazing guitar shaped groom's cake (I somehow managed to not get any pictures of that either!).
The wedding itself was on Sunday afternoon, and it was the sunniest and warmest it had been all weekend! Because I was so focused on watching the wedding and listening to what Matt was saying, I didn't get as many photos as I'd like of the ceremony. But I am very glad we have some memories of this special wedding! Here are some of Matt and the happy couple:
and here's one that shows the total beauty of the area!
Kenna spent the whole wedding blissfully happy, running from mountain to mountain while her Granddaddy chased her. Two year olds plus four hour car trips make for very active toddlers!
The reception was one of the best I've ever been to, with a buffet of delicious food and a really great band! I visited with Nana B. and stuffed myself silly on mini crab cakes and sweet tea while Kenna burned off the rest of her energy dancing with Daddy and Granddaddy:
The reception hall alone made me want to get married all over again. There were large columns throughout the room that were actually large trees, and everything was covered in twinkle lights. When we saw it at the rehearsal, we thought it was a big, beautiful room, but at the wedding, we found out that the walls all opened up to make it like a huge outdoor pavilion! This picture truly does not do it justice:
Juan is a really talented musician (hence the guitar groom's cake, and the guitar that everybody signed with paint pens instead of a guest book!) and played and sang a song he wrote for Terra for the wedding. It was incredibly beautiful and sweet! One of my favorite things about weddings is seeing all the married couples in the room seeming to reminisce about their own weddings and how long they have been married as they celebrate with a new couple starting their own marriage. I thought my heart would burst when Matt and I danced with both Kenna and my pregnant belly squished between us! We stayed as long as we possibly could until we had to get back on the road.
I'm always a little sad to see the sun setting as the mountains move into our rear view as we head home. The drive home from Boone will always remind me of a long conversation Matt and I had on the way home from another good friend's wedding in Boone where we both were at a crossroads with our faith. We spent the long four hours seriously discussing and deciding whether we were going to truly live our lives for the Lord, or keep on calling ourselves Christians while following our own plans. I'm so thankful firstly for a loving heavenly Father that continues calling us into reconciliation and obedience to Him, even in the midst of our sin and selfishness, and for a husband who loves me and loves the Lord- I treasure the way we have held each other up in our faith through the hard times so far and that a weekend alone with him only reassures my certainty that he is the very best friend I could have!
What a good, good weekend. We came home happy tired, refreshed, and ready to sleep in our own beds. Congratulations to Juan and Terra, the new Mr. and Mrs. Sosa!

19 Weeks...
On Friday the 8th I was 19 weeks pregnant, but the update is a little late because this morning we had our big ultrasound- our 2nd trimester scan where we could answer the big pregnancy question... boy or girl?
We wanted to wait until today to be able to say that Kenna is having a
BABY BROTHER!!!
We got the pure joy of seeing our very healthy baby boy on screen today- with everything measuring on track for his development, a healthy heartbeat of 152, and some definite "boy parts." I had felt as though it might be a boy, but I couldn't really give a reason why I thought so. I had to correct myself and say "or she" every time I naturally said "he" when referring to the baby. It is so nice to know for sure now!
After the ultrasound tech measured everything on the healthy checklist, she also took a few shots in 3D for us- a total surprise! She had to jiggle him around a little to get him to turn and face her... apparently he was a little shy after having exposed himself and kept his little hands up near his face. How amazing to see our little boy's face already! What amazing technology the Lord has provided for us to see him and know he's healthy! Here is our little buddy, Baby Boy B:
And Big Sister is looking very big this week too! She got to come with us to the ultrasound, and watch baby brother in real time up on the tv screen.
How far along:
19 weeks! Everything seems to be flying by.
Size of baby:
Estimated at 12 ounces according to the ultrasound, approximately the size of a large tomato!
Total Weight Gain:
7 pounds according to our home scale (that may be slightly less than accurate thanks to a little somebody who likes to jump on it to see the numbers change) and exactly 10 according to the doctor (I think we splurged a little on our trip this weekend!)
Maternity Clothes:
I wore my "fat jeans" buttoned low under my belly for our anniversary date last week, but I knew for sure it would be the last time I wore them! I unbuttoned them the minute I sat down in the car to leave the house!
Gender:
IT'S A BOY!
Movement:
I have a little rolly polly in there... lots of soft little movements here and there throughout the day are a constant reminder of my little co-inhabitant! He seems to be really active mostly at night, too.
What I miss:
Free time! There are a lot of things I used to do that there just isn't as much time for anymore, but I'm so thankful for this little window of time in my life where little hands and hearts constantly need me.
Sleep:
I've been having recurring dreams about my Mom that are kind of hard. I dream that she didn't really die, and I run into her later and she is confused about why our lives are so different and why we've been acting as though she had died. There's something so disconcerting about seeing someone and interacting with them exactly as they were in your dreams, and then waking up knowing they're not here anymore.
Symptoms:
I'm still craving apples with cheese sticks like crazy and having really stuffy nose at night.
Best moment this week:
Finding our baby is a baby brother! Now we just have to pick out a name.
What I'm looking forward to:
Seeing Kenna be a big sister. She is CRAZY about babies already!

We're so thankful for the ways the Lord has blessed our growing little family. We know that this little one, and Kenna too, are "God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). One of our prayers for our kids is from Ephesians 3:
"I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and high and long and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge- that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." (verses 16-19)

Picture Time.
I thought I'd write this out for posterity since it was one of my first frustrating experiences with our 2 year old acting like a 2 year old in public. This might be a story that only a mom would care anything about, but I thought it was kind of funny.
I took Kenna to JC Penney to get her "18 month" pictures... when she was 21 months old. I only take her for professional pictures once every 6 months or so, and take her to JC Penney since they have such great coupons that make them really cheap! Frivolous, I know, but these kiddos grow so fast! Kenna had been getting over a cold, so I probably should have known better than to take her at that time, but I didn't want her to get any closer to 2 than she already was. So I picked out 2 dresses I loved, and even splurged $2.50 on a new pack of hairbows since her newborn ones look too tiny for her head.
In the past, Kenna has LOVED getting pictures taken. She flirted with the camera people, played with the cute little props, and we end up with super cute memories of her little personality. Well... this time started out ok. I tried to time it in the morning around nap time when she would be the in the happiest mood. It was a Saturday, super busy at the mall, and she had fun watching all the other little kids who were there to have their pictures taken.
The pictures kind of tell the story for me:
This is fun, right? Then I suggested the rocking chair since she loves hers at home. Good idea, at first.
Then she realized there were other props we were not letting her have... enter meltdown #1. Suddenly she wanted to do anything in the room except take a picture. She saw the props closet. She saw a broom and wanted to sweep. She even tried to take the camera away.
We decided to regroup for a minute- I changed her dress and they changed the background. We tried to get Kenna to sit on this super cute little box (very fall-like) and we let her pull out one or two new props of her choice.
Almost a good idea, except now we have a tiny bit of strange hairiness in the photo (a little stuffed lion). We tried the box again, and she LOST it. Meltdown #2. I had tried everything at this point. I had taken her right outside the room for a little talk about attitudes. I was having to wipe her nose every 10 seconds from all the crying and that only made her madder. I had bribed her with fruit snacks. I was sitting right next to her and she wanted me to hold her. The poor photographer was practically rolling around on the floor, trying every trick in her book.
Finally I said, "oh just take a crying one. Maybe it will be cute."
Cute, and kind-of funny. At least we have the memory right? And I'm mostly distracted by the cuteness of the bare feets anyway.
I forget what happened next (I was exhausted at this point) but she took one last picture and it was ADORABLE. Exactly what I wanted:
And when I saw it on the computer screen to order the prints? Giant snot bubble. Classic!
I guess that's what I get for torturing my kid for 30 minutes in the name of "memories." I certainly got a memory didn't I? Hard to believe, but if I take her for another picture in 6 more months, we will have a second child in the photo! Maybe she'll be so distracted by her baby that we'll get a good one.

Well... this time started out ok. I tried to time it in the morning around nap time when she would be the in the happiest mood. It was a Saturday, super busy at the mall, and she had fun watching all the other little kids who were there to have their pictures taken.
The pictures kind of tell the story for me:
This is fun, right? Then I suggested the rocking chair since she loves hers at home. Good idea, at first.
Then she realized there were other props we were not letting her have... enter meltdown #1. Suddenly she wanted to do anything in the room except take a picture. She saw the props closet. She saw a broom and wanted to sweep. She even tried to take the camera away.
We decided to regroup for a minute- I changed her dress and they changed the background. We tried to get Kenna to sit on this super cute little box (very fall-like) and we let her pull out one or two new props of her choice.
Almost a good idea, except now we have a tiny bit of strange hairiness in the photo (a little stuffed lion). We tried the box again, and she LOST it. Meltdown #2. I had tried everything at this point. I had taken her right outside the room for a little talk about attitudes. I was having to wipe her nose every 10 seconds from all the crying and that only made her madder. I had bribed her with fruit snacks. I was sitting right next to her and she wanted me to hold her. The poor photographer was practically rolling around on the floor, trying every trick in her book.
Finally I said, "oh just take a crying one. Maybe it will be cute."
Cute, and kind-of funny. At least we have the memory right? And I'm mostly distracted by the cuteness of the bare feets anyway.
I forget what happened next (I was exhausted at this point) but she took one last picture and it was ADORABLE. Exactly what I wanted:
And when I saw it on the computer screen to order the prints? Giant snot bubble. Classic!
I guess that's what I get for torturing my kid for 30 minutes in the name of "memories." I certainly got a memory didn't I? Hard to believe, but if I take her for another picture in 6 more months, we will have a second child in the photo! Maybe she'll be so distracted by her baby that we'll get a good one.
