First Trip to the Pool!

This week we had our second day in a row of 90 degree heat, and it happened to be Matt's day off, so we decided it was the perfect weather to go to our neighborhood pool! So we got out our bathing suits, towels, and a couple of water toys, packed up our pool bag, and headed across the street in the jogging stroller.
I have to admit that Kenna currently has about 5 bathing suits. Silly, I know, but I keep finding really cute ones in great condition at Goodwill for about $1.50 and I can't resist when they are that cute and that cheap! I was so excited to get a good picture of her in this one, since I know it probably won't fit for long!
She was SO excited when she saw the pool!
Unfortunately, the water was still freezing cold, and Kenna wanted nothing to do with it (Daddy tried). We put our feet in, but that was about it.
So we didn't last long since the only options were to sit in the sun and sweat or to freeze in the pool! We ended up heading home, and taking a long walk in the neighborhood later when it had cooled off some.

We can't wait for the water to warm up so we can enjoy swimmimg!

18 Months!

Kenna turned 18 months old today... officially a year and a half old... so much closer to being 2 years old and already such a toddler!!! I know all parents say this, but it really is hard to believe.
Here are some of the fun things she's up to (aka the "don't forget to write this stuff in the baby book" list):

-climbing stairs & trying to open doorknobs

-starting to run & loves to be chased!

-several words: oh no, mama, dada, uh oh, wow, woah, yay, oww (as in ouch), no, nana (banana), dog, and "ahh pee" (more please- she says it when she makes the sign)... and the answer to every question is yeah or yep!

-loves books, bathtime, phones and remote controls, shoes, dogs, and anything that plays music

-can feed herself fairly well with a spoon & fork, and is loving all the new stuff she can eat with her 6 little teeth!

-understands simple commands (usually give it back to mommy, please! haha)

-can put her shoes on (usually on the right feet!)

-blows kisses with a big MUAH! sound

-loves water and anything she can splash in, including the rain!
She's very much into the getting-into-things stage... she loves to pull everything out of a cabinet, dump things out of a bucket, pull all the movies off the shelf, etc. We are still working on learning the putting-things-back and cleaning up part.
I love the mix of independence and need at this age. My little girl who can climb all the way up the stairs by herself knows who to come to when she wants us to open something for her or just for some hugs. She's been very clingy to me for the past few weeks, and refuses to let Matt put her to bed, so that has become our sweet little snuggle time. When we say night night, she knows it is time to blow kisses and wave bye to Daddy.
It's just so incredible to get to watch her grow. She has lost some of her "baby fat" and is looking much more like a toddler. She has gotten so tall and still has that red hair (complete strangers comment on it all the time) and a sassy temper to match! We love this wild and sweet little one so much!

Quickie Summer Fro Yo

Since the weather has been so hot and summery this week (90 plus degrees!) we've been indulging in some cold treats on the back porch while dinner is cooking.

This is our favorite!

Ingredients:
-one delicious tiny yogurt cup (the raspberry ones of these are amazing!)
-one baby spoon
-one baby in need of a chilly treat (especially when teething!):
Cut a slit in the middle of the lid, stick the spoon in, and freeze solid for a few hours.
Pop the frozen yogurt pop out of the cup under warm running water. Eat and enjoy while Daddy cooks something yummy on the grill!
Delicious!
And finally, be sure to make a silly face when you see that Mommy is taking your picture. (We're fairly certain she had a brain freeze by this point).

Mother's Day 2010

Mother's Day weekend started out on Saturday night when Matt and Kenna cooked me a steak dinner! They also gave me flowers and a beautiful coffee mug (given to me the day before so that I could have it for my coffee on Sunday morning). Matt said that since Kenna and I have breakfast/coffee time together pretty much every morning, he thought it would be a good way to celebrate me as a mommy- it also has a lovely verse from Proverbs on it. I love it, and have used it each time I've had coffee since then!
I got to pick out my own flowers from Fresh Market, but Matt said I picked the ones he would have picked for me because they looked "a little antique-y." Oh how well my love knows me. And after I put them in my favorite green vase (extra special on Mother's Day since it was given to me by my mom) they matched my new coffee cup!
On Mother's Day morning, Kenna woke up a little worse from a cold she had had the past few days, and we decided she didn't need to be exchanging those germs with other little folks in the nursery. Matt had to go teach Sunday school, so I stayed home with her. It seemed appropriate somehow to stay home with a sick little one on Mother's Day. I love being her mom, rain or shine.

Matt had to work for the rest of the day, and he knew I was feeling a little sorry for myself that other than a great family dinner with the Brogli side, we didn't get to spend the day as a family. So, wonderful husband that he is, he took me later in the week to get some plants for our front porch. He worked to hang hooks so that we could hang planters, and also chased a cranky Kenna around for at least an hour while I looked at probably every single flower Lowe's had to offer. I am so happy with how it looks now! We were joking that now our front porch finally looks like someone lives here again:
I am a notorious plant-killer, so I am working hard to "mommy" these plants to a long and happy life! I just realized while uploading these pictures that the green plant stands were also inherited from my mom- doubly special!
And we picked out matching hanging ones for the ferns:
Kenna stayed fairly occupied playing in the fountains in the outdoor "greenhouse" area of Lowe's (taken on Matt's cellphone). If there is ever water to splash in, this girl will find it!

New Job!

The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy! -Psalm 126:3

Last week we got word that Matt got a new job that he interviewed for a few weeks ago! God in his awesome and perfect timing provided this new job that will start right after Matt finishes his semester at school. The job is a healthcare information tech at UNC Chapel Hill hospital, and despite being diehard NC State fans, we couldn't be more excited. Matt will have to adjust to working a third shift schedule (approximately 10 pm to 7 am) but this job will also provide all three of us insurance coverage- something Matt has not had in several years!

We are so excited about this new job and just want to share with you all what amazing things God is capable of! He provides just what we need, right when we need it, and exactly how it will best accomplish his will in our lives. God also gave Matt grace as he gave his notice to his part time job he's been working the past few months. Kenna and I brought him a little "2 person" cake to celebrate his first last day at the old job and to congratulate him on the new one! (They have these little cakes in the deli area at Wal-Mart for about $5 and I think they're so fun for little celebrations!)
Forks optional:
Kenna is a fan!
The new job starts June first, and we are counting down the days. Thank you for all of you who have been praying for us about our job situation over the past year!

Congratulations, Daddy!

Summer Strawberries!

One of the things I've been excitedly waiting for Kenna to be old enough to do is go picking strawberries. My brother and I used to do this with my Mom, and I have fond memories of her buying a tub of cool whip for us to dip the strawberries in. It was always in the summer, so we'd be hot and sunshine-sweaty with the car windows down, eating fresh strawberries straight from the bucket all the way home.

Luckily, Kenna has a Granddaddy with an awesome backyard garden, which he planted full of strawberries for his three strawberry-loving grandchildren, and invited us over to pick some. I can't think of anything better than bare feet, sundresses, little hats, and eating our fill of strawberries right off the plant. It was a good, hot, fun, very summer-feeling afternoon that made for some very cute pictures of our little strawberry picker:
Whew... this 'working the field' thing is hard work! (And a little tough on the bare feets apparently).
Better rehydrate.
And here is our bounty that we promptly went home and ate on top of some shortcake! Can't you almost smell them? They were so good.
We were hot and tired, but had so much fun! We can't wait for summer!

Quickie Beach Trip!

Last weekend Matt had Sunday and Monday off of work, so we hopped in the car to Topsail Beach for a quick two day trip. We have been wanting to go back down for weeks now that the weather has been nice, and are so blessed to be able to stay at Granddaddy and Nana B's beach house.

On Sunday, the weather was a little windy and rainy, so we started with some pancakes at the Beach Shop & Grill where Kenna discovered a deep love for maple syrup.
Mommy and this big independent girl got a few essentials at the little grocery store (which by the way is the same store my grandmother used to take me to when we came here when I was a little girl!)
Then in the afternoon it was nice enough to take a long walk on the beach all the way down to the pier. We had brought our "new" jogging stroller (a neighbor was giving it away for free after it didn't sell at a yardsale, and we snagged it!) so Kenna was able to enjoy the walk with us. She thought it was a blast to ride through the water and have it splash up on her (Pontouf thought it was pretty great too!)
Kenna was not quite so sure about walking on the sand. It was really windy, so that made it a little harder- but she still seemed to like exploring the sand and sea shells. We took this little video of her, you can hear how windy it was!

Even though she rode in the stroller the majority of the time, I think our walk wore her out. We came back to the house and she slept on the couch in a fort of pillows for a good long time.
On Monday we woke up to beautiful sunshine, so we put on bathing suits, played out in the sand, put our toes in the cold water, and unfortunately didn't take any pictures.

We always love the beach, and short trips are never long enough! We can't wait to go back soon!
